14. Multiple Trait Selection
نویسنده
چکیده
Improvement in the efficiency and quality of animal production can be achieved by improving several characteristics simultaneously. For example, we may want to breed the ideal dairy cow that produces not only a lot of milk, but also with a high percentage of components like fat and especially protein. In addition, such high producing animals should preferably have no fertility problems, not suffer from diseases, and have a high roughage intake capacity. We would like pigs that grow fast but do not become too fat, with no leg problems and producing many piglets per litter. In beef cattle we want fast growing animals, but we don’t want too large a mature size. We would like merino sheep with very fine wool, yet yielding a lot of it.

Selection rarely (if ever!) simply acts on a single trait. In reality, selection occurs simultaneously on an entire suite of characters. These next two lectures deal with the theory of selection response and the measurement of selection (13 and 14, respectively) on multiple traits. The key concerns required for this theory are the phenotype and genetic (breeding values) correlations/covariances...
متن کاملGenetic worth and stability of selection indices in rice (Oryza sativa L.)
Improvement of one trait on its own will affect the performance of other traits because ofgenotypic correlations between traits. Index selection is one of the tools used by plant breedersto overcome this problem. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate selection indices developedfor improving grain yield in rice (Oryza sativa L.). Forty-nine rice genotypes were cultivated atTonekabon Rice Rese...
متن کاملMultiple-trait selection for radiographic health of the limbs, conformation and performance in Warmblood riding horses.
Information on 26 434 German Warmblood horses born between 1992 and 2001 was used for multivariate genetic analyses of radiographic health, conformation and performance traits to compare different modes of single- and multiple-trait selection of sires. Results of standardized radiological examinations of 5155 Hanoverian Warmblood horses, conformation evaluations from studbook inspections of 20 ...
متن کاملMultiple-trait genomic selection methods increase genetic value prediction accuracy.
Genetic correlations between quantitative traits measured in many breeding programs are pervasive. These correlations indicate that measurements of one trait carry information on other traits. Current single-trait (univariate) genomic selection does not take advantage of this information. Multivariate genomic selection on multiple traits could accomplish this but has been little explored and te...
متن کاملLecture 14
Lecture 13 examined selection response with multiple traits. Here we consider measuring selection on multivariate phenotypes in some detail, as this is a very popular exercise in modern evolutionary biology. Moving to multiple traits poses no changes in measuring fitnesses of individuals (Lecture 12), but does require us to provide the multivariate versions of the univariate differentials S and...
متن کاملEvaluation and Characterization of Barley Inbred Lines in Temperate Regions of Country
Extended Abstract Introductionand Objective: Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) with a cultivated area of nearly one and a half million hectares and with a production of about three million tons per year after wheat is the main crop in the country. The main objectives of this study were to (i) examine the variation within the barley national germplasm, (ii) compare the introduced germplasm with the...
